Red Flannel Squirrel by David Quinn

rfsA not for children children’s comic book, this is the tale of a stuffed animal, a red flannel squirrel that the children do not play with. Much in line with the make believe world that children inhabit, the red flannel squirrel is happy with his lot, and often considers himself better than the other stuffed animals that the children play with more. Sad, wistful, and somewhat disturbing how isolation can be covered with a hint of madness, David Quinn has gone over the top in this amazing comic book.

This is an unusual story, where the red flannel squirrel comes off as vain and self centered, but from an adults perspective this is more of a protection mechanism for the main character. Although there are people who go through life equally vain as the squirrel and are seemingly untouched by the issues of the day or of others, the character in the comic book is over the top, and acts as if the world revolves around them. This is what makes the comic book broody and dark, you know these people, and while there is no tragic ending in the first comic book (and seemingly only comic book in the series from Sirius/Dog Star), you know that down the road only madness will rule.

Well worth picking up, hard to find, you can vicariously understand the characters in the comic book, but you do not want them to be you.
