I am a huge Billy Martinez Fan, so when I got a chance to get a copy of “the works” which spans a decade of his work, his life, and some of the bleeding edge stuff he does, I had to get it. I have not been disappointed, this is a unique view into Billy’s artistic process, who he is, and what he does. This is a large size sketchbook, and each one is signed with a personal drawing, making each copy unique, no two are going to be alike. When you get the book, you have a real opportunity to see how he creates his own creative environment, which is something every artist does. He runs his own small publishing company over at Neko Press, which gives and opportunity not just for him, but also for other artists that he works with to have an expressive outlet. You see that in the workshops, the classes, and the environments that he creates around him. The pictures and drawings of his studio are simply a wonderful look into the environment that he creates in. the world that he works in and the characters he creates.
If you are a Billy Martinez fan, you need to get this book, if you are an artist and interested in how people create and develop their own creative environments, characters, and settings you want to get this book. This is an amazing art book, and each one is unique, each one is signed and has an original sketch from Billy in the book (usually right next to the signature line). The pages are full color, filled with sketches, drawings, comics and some of his fine art.
This is truly a unique experience for a sketchbook, and something not to be passed up or missed. The book is readable and approachable by all ages; everyone will find something to like in this viewpoint of the world through Billy’s eyes. Rated five of five stars and it is a wonderful addition to anyone who loves Billy. If you have not read anything from Billy Martinez at all, this is a great way to get started; it will help ground the reader into his worldview. Billy has a deep body of work, and will keep you entertained for years as you discover the world of the artist, “The Works” is probably the first best step into the way that comic book writers see and create their worlds.
