Book Review Crippled Angel by Sara Douglas

By admin | May 26, 2008

Crippled Angel Sara DouglassThere are a lot of comments on this one, with a sharp line between love and “eh it was ok”, this book will either delight you or make you angry swearing off Sara period. The review below is from an Amazon customer. We pretty much so agree with the summation, it is an interesting book, and she does come up with a great ending.
After some rather disappointing conclusions to her huge epic series like the six book Wayfarer Redemption Series and the Troy Game Series, finally Douglass comes up with a satisfying ending for me. After reading the three books in under two weeks, this stunning finale between angels and demons will leave a lasting impression on me for a long while.

I think the main reason why I enjoyed this series so much, and the final book especially, was because of the characters. Each of them has their fears, doubts, strengths and weaknesses, making them their role in the story enjoyable. For the first time in any of her series, Douglass makes me like all the main characters. In this book, the characters’ accomplishments and downfalls lifted me and saddened me in turn. This series and final book showcases a character-driven story that develops into how relationships can be strengthened and how fragile some relationships are.

My only qualm about this final book was that some plot bits were a bit predictable. But that might actually end up being a good thing as it made me read faster to see if I was right. Another thing was this book was a lot shorter than the previous two books, making Douglass jump quickly from plot point to plot point, but then again she didn’t drag out anything. Though I wish there was more to read.

So I highly recommend reading this series even if the first one was a bit slow and a little irritating (but that’s for another review). Not only will you get a history lesson of sorts about Kings of England and religion at that time period but a satisfying feeling after reading the three books. Source: Amazon.com

Mars Phoenix Lander makes it

By admin | May 26, 2008

Amazingly the mars Phoenix Lander made it safely to the arctic regions of mars last night in what was a perfect landing. Now maybe we will get to see some of the more interesting things in an area that we have not seen yet on mars.

While we doubt that anyone will be knocking on the space craft’s door wanting to say hello, the odds of finding life, indeed any life on Mars, the concept of ice, water, dirt, we might get lucky here on this one.

“What a thrilling landing! But the team is waiting impatiently for the next set of signals that will verify a healthy spacecraft,” said Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, principal investigator for the Phoenix mission. “I can hardly contain my enthusiasm. The first landed images of the Martian polar terrain will set the stage for our mission.” Source: NASA

It will be interesting to see what they find; the gallery is pretty cool if fairly minimalistic in relationship to the mars rovers, but over time, we are really hoping to see more cool stuff.

Japanese robots invade Seattle

By admin | May 18, 2008

Robots imageThe science fiction museum in the Seattle Center is featuring a collection of vintage Japanese Robots for your enjoyment. The exhibit runs this summer, so if you find yourself in Seattle, the Science Fiction Museum is a great place to spend the day (ok, if you are a hard core science fiction buff).

Robots: A Designer’s Collection of Miniature Mechanical Marvels celebrates our long fascination with humankinds’ technological version of itself. This exhibition draws from a one-of-a-kind assemblage of toy robots, which noted designer Tom Geismar has been collecting for decades. Inspired by antique tin and wooden toys, samurai warriors and mid-20th century Japanese film characters, these intricately detailed and beautifully designed miniatures are set against EMP|SFM’s backdrop of life-sized robots, androids and cyborgs from the world of science-fiction film and television. Source: SFM

For all of us who grew up with gigantic robots, who are very cool, can destroy cities with a single ray beam, fire stream, or otherwise, this is an exhibit you will not want to miss. There is something elegant in Japanese robots and how they were portrayed, and many a kid has taken to the idea of robots, and obeying your robotic overlords as a good thing. Robots have been at the heart of science fiction as both helper and menace since near day one, with some of the automatons from the earliest days of mankind, through the mechanical turk, through to modern day.

We are just obsessed with Golems.

Do we really want three more battlestar galactica movies

By admin | May 18, 2008

Battle Star galactica goes right to moviesReports are coming in that the BSG series is far from over, and far from having “everything revealed” at the close of the fourth and final season. While we are having fun watching star buck totally trip out on a recycling ship, the franchise seems to have lost much of its way starting in season three and moving well into season four. It is still enjoyable, but seasons one and two had a edge that has just not been repeated in seasons three and four.

There will be three-count’em-three BATTLESTAR GALACTICA TV Movies produced after the series wraps. These films will go straight to DVD like RAZOR last year. Many of the current cast are willing to appear in them. Source: Galactica Sitrep

Most of this information was broken on the podcast “The Doctor and Mrs Who”, and quickly picked up by IO9, Galatica Sitrep and of course us. We agree with the IO9 statement, that the series should end when it should end, and not be dragged on to simply make money, there are other stories to tell, BSG seems to have lost its edge unfortunately, and while the movies might go right to DVD, these might just end up being “bargain basement” DVD’s in the longer run.

But then we could be completely wrong.

Cosmic Voyage A Scientific Discovery of Extraterrestrials Visiting Earth

By admin | May 18, 2008

Cosmic VoyageAre aliens living in New Mexico underground? Not those coming in across the border but those that are coming in from spaceships. Was their humanoid life on mars that had to move to earth? All those questions and more can be answered in this pseudo scientific book “Cosmic Voyage: A Scientific Discovery of Extraterrestrials Visiting Earth”. Many critics panned this book early on, but in the longer run it can provide a few hours of amusement in reading. Some of the reading public really liked it.

I have been touched by many books that I have read, but this one, spoke directly to my heart. I believe people interested in the UFO phenomenon, will find this book amazingly well written, and confirms aspects of the UFO encounters that many have experienced. Remote viewing can, and will be the way of the future for all interested in contact with alien beings from other worlds. Dr. Browns experiences are well documented, and the discussions that take place after his remote viewing sessions opened my mind, and was very insightful. I have purchased several copies of this book, because everyone that I have borrowed it to, has decided that they had to keep it for future references. Source: Amazon

Either way you look at it, this book can be interesting or humorous, that is up to you.
